The Resurrection

This mosaic follows the account of the Resurrection in Matthew 28:1-7. As Mary Magdalene and "the other Mary" come to the tomb there is a great earthquake and an angel appears, rolls back the stone that had closed the tomb, sits on it, and tells the women that Jesus has been raised. As in many early portraits of Gabriel and other archangels, the angel's office is denoted by the labarum in his left hand. The tomb, with its broken door, is in the shape of a small temple.

This is one of the 13 mosaics of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ along the upper band of the right wall of the nave. See also a view of the entire left wall.
